CARLOS PIÑANA - SPAIN

A flamenco guitarist of the new generation, combining tradition with the new interpretive demands of this noble art

Flamenco guitarist Carlos Piñana has acted in practically the whole Spanish geography, as well as in many cities like Paris, London, Berlin, Oxford and Stockholm among others. It should be noted his participation in the International Music Festival 'François Miterrand' in the Mauritius Islands?.

Family with Flamenco tradition

He was born in Cartagena, Murcia, Carlos is the youngest of a family with an important flamenco tradition, along with his brothers, the guitarist Pepe Piñana and the singer Curro Piñana.

The tradition began with his grandfather, Antonio Piñana, singer and winner of the first Cante de las Minas contest in the sixties, and continued with the renowned guitarist Antonio Piñana, Carlos’ father.

Formal background and recognition

From an early age, Carlos Piñana has absorbed the learning of flamenco, a discipline that combined with the study of classical guitar in the Conservatory of Music of Cartagena between 1988 and 1998.

Since he starts his professional activity with the flamenco guitar in 1995, Carlos has stood out as a firm promise of the flamenco guitar.

Among the different awards, we can highlight the First Prize and Bordón Minero at the Mines Festival in 1996, the Ramón Montoyá National Guitar Prize in Cordoba in 1998 and the First Prize "Sabicas' at the Festival Nacional de Jóvenes Flamencos...

Discography

His first album, titled “El cuidado de la esencia ", was published in 1996, an album that, as its name implies, transmits the flamenco tradition.

"Palosanto", "Mundos Flamencos", "Manos Libres" and "De la raíz al alma", are other titles that complete his work.

In addition, he has collaborated in two discs with his brother Curro Piñana, concretely in ""De lo humano y lo divino" y en "Cal·librí”

He has also collaborated in the compilations "Con duende" (Together with Camarón, Menese or Carmen Linares) and "Strictly World 99" edited by the European Forum of Worldwide Music Festivals.

Collaboration with Alhambra guitars

Carlos Piñana plays with an Alhambra flamenco guitar Mengual and Margarit model, made of solid Indian Rosewood back and sides, an instrument which has been specially adapted with a special design of the headstock.

Furthermore, the design of the headstock is the same of the 10 Fp Piñana model, a development that along with the model 5 Fp Piñana, has been realized in collaboration with this guitarist.

The main characteristics of these models are: solid India Rosewood for back and sides and solid cedar for the top. The finish on 10 Fp Piñana is matt while on the 5 Fp OP Piñana is open pore.

Narciso Yepes Festival

Carlos Piñana is the artistic director of the Narciso Yepes International Guitar Festival, which was held in March 2017 through its first edition, where Alhambra Guitars supported this event.
