The town of Muro de Alcoy is located in the north of the province of Alicante, with four districts in its value. It is a beautiful village surrounded by pine trees, fruit trees and many almond trees, whose origin dates back to nothing more and nothing less than the time of the Arab occupation.
Dry farming has been the main wealth of this area and its most representative crops are olive trees, almond trees and cereals, among others. Since the 60's Muro has become an industrial town, dominated by the textile sector, although other manufactures such as the manufacture of handmade gloves, frames and moldings, among others, also stand out.
The villages of the Sierra Mariola have a very broad and diverse architectural, historical and cultural heritage, ranging from its districts, to the municipality; do not miss the Palau de la Senyoria, the Chapel of the Virgen de los Desamparados, the Chapel of San Antonio or the old train station. Among the places with more antiquity are the Church of San Juan Bautista, of the eighteenth century, and the Fountain of San Roque, which has more than 300 years old and dispenses natural water from the Sierra Mariola.
It is also worth visiting the entrance to the village to see the monument to El Tío Pep, a character known for a popular song of the area. And as a special visit, the Beneito Cave, which has an archaeological site of the Paleolithic.
In the surroundings of the town you will find some marked trails and several centers where hikers can get information. Among the most beautiful spots in the area are the Sierra Mariola Natural Park, Els Fontanars, the Baladre Fountain, the Cova Beneito or the Penya Flare route.
You can start by giving yourself a good gastronomic tribute. Try typical dishes such as borreta, blat picat (chopped wheat), pericana, arròs al forn or bajoques farcides, and local products such as sausages made with the magnificent aromatic herbs of the Sierra Mariola. And as a star product, the oil from the centenary olive trees of the municipality.
And keep in mind the calendar of events in Muro de Alcoy, with festivities such as the Popular Fair on January 17, in honor of St. Anthony; the Carnivals in February; the Fallas for St. Joseph, on March 19; the Major Festivals of the second weekend of May, in honor of the Virgin of the Forsaken, which include parades of Moors and Christians, or the pilgrimage to the Chapel of St. Anthony and the Danses de Palacio in June.
